Reliance Jio violates net neutrality, blocks VPN sites.

Reliance Jio, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, 9th largest telecom operator in the world is reportedly blocking various proxy and VPN sites, which are otherwise available on other providers.
This issue was first reported on the India subreddit, r/india where users were outraged to learn this.
hide.me, and others like vpnbook are blocked by the provider, in a country that is already notorious for internet shutdowns and censorship
Jio, owned by the largest corporation in terms of financial measures in the country is massively successful in India, where it has broken into the ranks of telecos and has already become the 3rd largest mobile operator in the country, which has seen a boom in the number of internet users, and represents the largest unsaturated market for tech companies, because of The Great Firewall of China. Jio, which claims to have 250 million subscribers, only provides 4G LTE connections in India, and for the free calling uses VoLTE.
When hide.me is visited using the Jio network, an error is displayed saying that you are not allowed to access this website in compliance with Directorate of Telecom order. Which DoT order gave Jio the license to violate Net Neutrality rules expressly is frankly, beyond us, and especially why DoT decided to favor Jio with new rules and neglected to inform other providers about the 'new rules'.
The Internet Freedom Foundation has been made aware of this issue and they have already setup a form for users to raise their voices if any ISP has blocked proxy sites in violation of Net Neutrality.
You can find the link to the form here.
Net Neutrality rules, enforced by the country through amendments to teleco licenses, explicitly require that all internet data be treated equally, and throttling and blocking are illegal. The Silicon River has sought a response from Jio, but at the moment of writing there has been none.

There are very few countries which outright ban VPNs, for example Belarus and China, which are associated with encroachments of civil rights, or at the very least where freedom of speech is not fundamental. You can see a list of countries that try to ban VPNs and by extension control data here.
The Republic Of India on the other hand, the land of Gandhi, does have right to speech but even then the country is notorious for censorship and internet blocking. In fact India has witnessed the highest number of government imposed internet shutdowns. 130 to be precise. (Although many are done given militancy in the disputed region of Kashmir on which India has sovereign rights but is claimed by Pakistan as well). To be fair, some are effected to contain the spread of rumors which may lead to communal clashes.
Even then, VPN blocking, is a gross violation of citizen's privacy and internet shutdowns encroach on basic freedom and this needs to be stopped. Free distribution of information is a basic need for all developed countries, and India cannot hope to become developed, with this amount of censorship.
As said by IFF chief, "Blocking the internet is the 21st century version of burning books".
Jio has violated the law, by circumventing net neutrality. If you want to raise your voice against this, fill this Internet Freedom Foundation form
